The Best Reading Instruction is Personalized

The research on reading is clear: readers flourish with personalized, science-based reading instruction from highly qualified teachers. Our small size ensures that every scholar is known and receives tailored instruction at their level.

Beginning with assessments that identify individual needs and strengths, we tailor a plan to support each scholar to reach personal literacy goals. Our two-teacher model ensures that scholars have dedicated time with a qualified literacy teacher. Whether a scholar requires support for phonics and fluency, or extra challenge in comprehension, our small group targeted instruction helps every child get exactly what they need.

Teachers also use ongoing assessments to track scholar progress from kindergarten through sixth grade. By continually assessing and using that data to plan for lessons, struggling readers can receive immediate interventions, preventing gaps in knowledge. This type of teaching allows teachers to adjust pacing for every scholar – whether slowing down to spend more time on a skill, or speeding up to provide just the right amount of challenge.

We Never Stop Teaching Reading

Our older scholars still practice reading fundamentals, but in the upper grades we get to deep dive into the subject areas. In science, scholars explore the physical world by reading non-fiction text. Poetry is used to foster a love of words and ideas. And in social studies, biographies and historical fiction help scholars step back in time to understand what life was like in the past.

ACE Prep teachers use reading materials of varying difficulties and genres, while also including texts that represent the backgrounds, needs, and interests of our scholars. Choice in books, along with a caring teacher who can make great recommendations, helps all of our scholars grow in their love of reading.

Why a Strong Literacy Foundation Matters

An early foundation of reading unlocks doors to the world and paves the path to academic success. Strong readers don’t just do better in reading class; they confidently solve word problems in math because they don’t get stuck on the directions. Strong readers can follow science experiments thanks to their complex vocabularies and they write better sentences while knowing how to express themselves and word their questions. Our scholars pick up new subjects faster because they don’t have to fight through the text to get there.

Studies show that, time after time, the correct start can be critical in clearing the pathway for higher education. We know that kids who get a head start on reading don’t have to spend their later years playing catch-up. That’s why we start early and stay focused from Kindergarten through 6th grade.
